Moza R21 Ultra review: 21Nm of sustained torque for $699

Researched overview Manufacturer listings and owner reports, with no hands-on testing.

The Moza R21 Ultra makes 21Nm of sustained torque and sells base only for $699 on Moza’s US store. Sustained is the load-bearing word: Moza asks the question on its own listing and answers that the rating “refers to sustained torque, not a short-term peak”, which is a different measurement from the peak figures most manufacturers quote. Against a 15Nm peak base the gap is wider than 6 Nm, and against an 18Nm holding figure the two numbers are not on the same scale at all.

Nothing steers it out of the box. The box list runs the wheelbase, a power adapter, a power cord, a data cord, and a bolt kit, so a rim is the next purchase: Moza’s cheapest is the $139 ESX, which takes the total to $838, and its cheapest brake and throttle set, the $149 SRP2, takes it to $987. US store prices read 31 July 2026, before tax.

The motor is an all-new zero-cogging flat-wire design, and the position sensor under it is a 21-bit magnetic encoder Moza rates at 2,097,152 points per revolution, the same bit depth it gives the 9 Nm R9 and the 12 Nm R12. It draws 360W, weighs 9.0 kg, and bolts through the bottom, the sides, or the front, which is where the mount question starts.

The endurance case for torque: a base bought for what it holds over an hour rather than for what it peaks at.

Buy it if:

  • You want headroom that does not fade: 21 Nm is Moza’s sustained figure, and its own copy claims no thermal throttling behind it.
  • You already have a rigid rig, or are building one. Moza names a simulator rig for this base and never a desk.
  • You run long stints in heavy cars: GT3, prototype, and high-downforce loads are where the difference between a sustained and a peak rating shows up.
  • You’re on Xbox and will buy the ESX rim, which is the part that carries the license.

Not the one if you race on PlayStation (Moza states that its products do not support PS4 or PS5) or you want a wheel in the box (the Moza R5 bundle ships one, at 5.5 Nm).

A sustained rating is a different promise. A peak figure says what the motor can produce briefly, and how long “briefly” lasts is rarely published. Moza’s claim here is that 21 Nm is what the base holds, which is the number that matters at the end of a stint rather than on the first flying lap. Moza gives no duration and no temperature beside it, so the claim is a claim rather than a curve. The torque guide covers why the metric decides what a torque number is worth.

Zero cogging, and 21 bits under it. Cogging is the faint magnetic stepping a motor makes at low speed, and a flat-wire zero-cogging design is aimed straight at it. The encoder resolves 2,097,152 points per turn, which is the resolution that keeps kerb texture and the front tires starting to slide legible under 21 Nm of load. Set the base near its ceiling and trim in-game gain to avoid clipping; the per-base FFB guide has Moza’s settings.

iRacing at 360Hz. Moza puts an iRacing 360Hz mode on the listing, which is a claim about the rate the sim hands forces to the base rather than about the USB link, given separately as a 1000Hz refresh rate. It is the same feature VRS advertises as “360Hz iRacing ready” on the DFP15.

  • “R21” names two different bases, and the used market is where that bites. Moza’s compatibility guide heads one column “R21 V1(2023 later)/V2” and the next “R21 Ultra”, and the number in the name is the same on both, so it settles nothing. Only the Ultra is on Moza’s US store today, and Moza serves no product page for either earlier revision, which makes a spec sheet for one hard to come by. A secondhand listing that says only “R21” can be either. Look for the word Ultra, or for the zero-cogging flat-wire motor, which Moza calls all-new on this base.
  • Rig, not desk, and Moza sells nothing that says otherwise. Its own manual reads “The wheelbase features mounting holes on the bottom, sides, and front, allowing you to securely attach it to your simulator rig”, and the words desk, table, and clamp appear nowhere in it. Moza sells four clamps, and the $49 Table Clamp the R9 and R12 use describes itself as “a versatile installation solution for MOZA R5, R9, and R12 direct drive wheel bases”, which is not this base. The “optional adjustable bracket available” its spec row names matches no product in Moza’s catalog, and the manual says of the bracket in its own installation drawing that it “is for reference only and is not a MOZA product”.   • $699 buys the base and nothing else. No wheel, no pedals, no clamp. $838 is what it costs to steer, $987 to steer and brake, and every wheel in Moza’s own “Upgrade for the Ultimate Simulation” block on this listing costs more than the ESX the cheap route buys, starting at the $399 GS V2P.
  • Moza’s copy disagrees with itself on thermal behavior. One feature block promises “peak realism and control without thermal throttling” and the torque FAQ says the same in different words, while the thermal FAQ on the same page describes “intelligent thermal management with real-time temperature monitoring and torque regulation to maintain optimal performance”. Regulating torque to hold a temperature is the thing the other two sentences say does not happen. Nothing published settles which one describes the firmware.
  • The price band is crowded and every neighbor states its torque differently. The VRS DFP15 is $699.00 at 15 Nm peak, the Fanatec ClubSport DD is $699.99 at 15 Nm holding, and the Fanatec GT DD Pro and Logitech G PRO DD11 are both $599.99, at 8 Nm peak and 11 Nm with no metric named. Comparing the 21 against any of them is comparing two different measurements.
  • No PlayStation, and Xbox costs a rim. PC is the only platform on the spec table. Xbox works through the $139 ESX and not through the base.
  • VRS DirectForce Pro DFP15: the same $699 for 15Nm peak on a 21-bit encoder, with the controller inside the housing, if a smaller high-end base on a PC-only path suits.
  • Fanatec GT DD Pro: $599.99 and 8 Nm, far less torque, and the officially licensed PS5 path this base does not have.
  • Fanatec ClubSport DD: $699.99 for 15 Nm of holding torque, the closest price in the catalog to this one, if you want the Fanatec rim ecosystem.
  • Logitech G PRO DD11: $599.99 for 11 Nm, the cheapest of the four, with TrueForce and Logitech’s console SKUs.
  • Moza R12: $469 for 12 Nm in the same ecosystem, the one to buy if the rig is the limit rather than the motor.
  • Asetek Forte: $949 for 18Nm on a 22-bit encoder, if resolution is worth $250 more than torque that holds.

Sort the mount first. Moza will not name a desk for this base, and 21 Nm through a flexing desktop smears the detail the encoder is there to deliver. That listing names no console in Moza's own copy: “PlayStation”, “PS5”, and “PS4” appear 0 times in the served HTML, counted word-bounded and case-insensitively on 2026-07-31, and its two “Xbox” hits are one customer review counted twice, once in the review widget's own JSON and once in the rendered markup. Moza's own support article for this product, “MOZA R21 Ultra Wheel Base Support”, repeats the listing's specification table including “Platform | PC” and names no console either. So the console answers rest on the class statements in Moza's Wheel Base FAQs, quoted per answer above with their own source and check date, and the comment over this block records what that page does and does not name.

Frequently asked questions

Is the R21 Ultra's 21Nm sustained or peak torque?

Sustained, and Moza answers it in its own words on the listing: "The R21 Ultra's 21Nm rating refers to sustained torque, not a short-term peak. This means the base can maintain full performance even during long, demanding endurance sessions without torque throttling." That changes what the number compares against. A VRS DFP15 quotes 15Nm peak and a Fanatec ClubSport DD+ quotes 18Nm holding, and none of the three figures measures the same thing. Moza's own spec row uses a third word, "Maximum Torque: 21 N·m", so the FAQ answer is the one to hold it to. Checked 31 July 2026.

Moza R21 Ultra or R25 Ultra?

$200 buys 4 Nm and 18 more watts. The R21 Ultra is $699 at 21 Nm on 360W rated power; the R25 Ultra is $899 at 25 Nm on 378W. Everything below the motor is shared: the same 248.8 × 140 × 135 mm housing, the same 9 kg class, the same five-item box, the same ports, and one mounting drawing that covers both bases, named R21_R25_Base_Slot_Installation_Diagram.pdf on Moza's own CDN. Buy the R25 only if the extra 4 Nm is the point, because nothing else on the spec sheet moves. US store prices read 31 July 2026.

Does the Moza R21 Ultra work on Xbox or PlayStation?

PC always, Xbox only with the Xbox-licensed MOZA ESX rim, and no PlayStation. The spec table's first row reads "Platform: PC". Moza's Wheel Base FAQs say that "the MOZA ESX Steering Wheel can be used together with a MOZA wheel base to work on Xbox consoles" and that "Without an Xbox-licensed wheel or bundle, the base itself cannot operate on Xbox consoles", and its compatibility guide ticks the ESX in a column headed "R21 Ultra". The same FAQ page answers PlayStation flat: "Currently, MOZA Racing products do not support PS4 or PS5. No official workaround is available at this time." For PS5 look at the Fanatec GT DD Pro. Is a used "Moza R21" this base?

Not necessarily, and the word to look for is Ultra. Moza's compatibility guide runs two separate columns for the name, "R21 V1(2023 later)/V2" and "R21 Ultra", so Moza itself treats them as two products. Only the Ultra is on Moza's US wheel base collection today, and Moza's global store now redirects the old /products/r21-wheelbase URL to /products/r21-ultra. The older family is still supported, since the guide ticks every wheel, pedal set, dash, shifter, and handbrake in its V1/V2 column.
