Sim racing hardware: what each part decides, and what to buy first
A sim racing setup is five parts: a wheelbase that makes the force, a rim you hold, pedals you brake with, a frame that holds all three still, and something to see the track through. Two of them move lap times. A brake you can hit at the same pressure every lap is where consistency comes from, and a frame that does not shift under your foot is what lets you hit it. The other three change how much you enjoy the hobby, and they come after those two.
What to buy first
Section titled “What to buy first”Buy the brake before the base, and put a rigid mount ahead of both if you are still clamped to a desk. Wheelbases: where the force comes from
Section titled “Wheelbases: where the force comes from”Drive type decides the feel. Gear and belt bases put a gearset or a toothed belt between the motor and your hands; a direct drive base bolts the rim onto the motor shaft, so nothing mechanical sits in the path to filter what reaches you.

Wheels and rims: the part you hold
Section titled “Wheels and rims: the part you hold”Shape follows the car you drive: you cross your hands on a round rim for rally and drift, and you never move them on a formula rim. Mounting is close to universal on a 6x70mm bolt pattern, but the buttons and paddles only report if the quick-release carries your base’s data link.

Pedals: where the lap time is
Section titled “Pedals: where the lap time is”A potentiometer measures how far the pedal moved. A load cell measures how hard you pushed. Your leg reproduces a force far more reliably than it reproduces a position, which is why the brake sensor shows up in lap times and the wheel mostly does not.

Shifters, button boxes, and handbrakes

Screens and VR: what you see
Section titled “Screens and VR: what you see”Horizontal field of view is set by screen width and how far your eyes sit from the screen, and nothing else. Get it right and the car sits at the size your brain expects, so brake points and apexes land where you aim them. That setting costs nothing and comes before a second and third monitor.

Rigs and seats: what everything else bolts to
Section titled “Rigs and seats: what everything else bolts to”Frame stiffness caps what the rest of the hardware can deliver. Pedal force that bends the frame arrives at the sensor as a different number each lap, and base torque that twists a desk shakes the monitor sitting on the same desk.

When something is already wrong

Frequently asked questions
What do I actually need to start sim racing?
A wheel and pedals, something rigid to mount them to, and a screen. The mount is the part people skip: a base clamped to a desk that twists and an office chair that rolls back every time you brake undo part of what you paid for. You can also start on a controller, and how well that works depends on the sim, which sim racing on a controller or keyboard breaks down.
What should I upgrade next?
A load cell brake, unless you are still on a desk or a flexing stand, in which case a rigid mount comes first. The sim racing upgrade order has the full sequence and maps it onto what you own now, and pedals or wheelbase first takes the head-to-head on its own.
Do I need a shifter or a handbrake?
Usually neither. Every GT3, GT4, prototype, and open-wheel formula car shifts with steering-wheel paddles, so an H-pattern shifter earns its desk space for historics, road cars, rally, and a short list of slower iRacing cars.
